Fresno County's Italian story starts with agricultural opportunity. According to the Fresno County Historical Society timeline, the county's major influx of Italians began toward the end of the nineteenth century, when overpopulation and limited economic prospects in southern Italy pushed families to seek new land. Most arrivals came from rural regions and were drawn to the county's farm and vineyard prospects.
The timeline records several early milestones. Around 1885, Dominic Imperatrice and Joseph ("Steve") Spano are noted as among the first Italians to settle in Fresno County. In 1906, Antonio Faretta opened a beer garden in West Fresno that grew into one of the city's longest-running restaurants. The Dante Club, established in 1932 by the local Italian community, remains one of the area's active social organizations.
Many families expanded beyond farming. The same timeline notes that the Caglia family moved into industrial and real estate work, the Di Cicco family became prominent in local Italian dining, and Caldecott-winning author Leo Politi, honored with a Fresno County Public Library branch in 1974, came from the community.
In April 2022, the Fresno County Fairgrounds opened a digital Italian American heritage exhibit inside its community cultural center, funded by the Isnardi Foundation, E. & J. Gallo Winery, and community donations. The display documents how immigrant families shaped county agriculture, business, and civic life.
